Where are you located?
We are on Douglas Road (known locally as “The Main Douglas Road”).
I want to speak to someone but I am not sure who I should see?
We are experienced in helping to place you with the most suitable Counsellor or Doctor that is suited to your needs. When you contact our clinic, or when we cal you via our free call back service, we go through your presenting issue and we advise you who is most experienced in dealing with that issue. Our job is to ensure that you receive the exact care that you need whilst a client at our clinic.
How much do sessions cost?
Individual sessions with a Counsellor/Psychotherapist cost €80 per session, whereas a couple’s session costs €100
General sessions with a Clinical/Consultant Psychologist cost €180. Please see our rates page for a full breakdown of fees
Sessions with our Consultant Psychiatrist are charged at a cost of €240 for the initial assessment, and €200 for each subsequent session.
What happens at my first session?
When you come to your appointment at The Hazelton Clinic, the reception staff will check you in. You will be given a form to fill out (Client Intake Form), where you provide for us, your contact details, GP details, next kin & presenting issue. We will then ask you to confirm by signature of your awareness of our confidentiality agreement & cancellation policy ( each of which is printed on your form to review)
You will then be offered a hot or cold beverage to have while you wait or to take with you into your session. At your appointment time ,your Counsellor/Doctor will come out to the waiting area to welcome you. Once you are in session, the Counsellor/Doctor will go through the Intake Form with you and will begin to explore the reason/s you have decided to come to the clinic. With your Counsellor/Doctor it will be agreed between you how often you need to come to sessions/follow ups. This varies from person to person but will be agreed around your personal circumstances and needs. Any appointment made within a session will be confirmed with the reception staff once you come out of each session.
How long is a session?
A session with a Counsellor is 1 hour long. Sessions with a Psychiatrist is 1 hour long. Sessions with a Psychologist are typically 1 hour, however this may be extended if an assessment is taking place for your or your child.
How soon can you fit me in?
We are available for sessions between 9am and 9pm throughout the week, including weekends and bank holidays. For a counselling session we can often fit you in on the day of your call if required. The maximum you will have to wait between first call and your session is 48 hours.
What approaches do you use?
Will my insurance cover the sessions?
This all depends on your policy. If you know the Counsellor/Doctor you wish to see, or have booked in with a Counsellor/Doctor for the first time, please check with your insurance provider before starting your therapy.
Do you accept medical cards?
Unfortunately, we cannot offer concessions to medical card holders. However, we can recommend alternative options in the Cork area.
How many sessions will I need?
This is very specific to each client. We generally recommend that clients commit to attending between six and eight sessions in order to affect change.
Can I make an appointment for my friend/family member/partner?
Yes, appointments which are booked by a friend / family member / partner can be held provisionally for a period of about 24 hours.
To confirm this booking, we do require the client themselves to call the clinic and confirm once an appointment has been booked on their behalf.
For minors (under 18), appointment must be made by a parent / legal guardian in order to proceed.
What’s the difference between a Psychiatrist, a Psychologist and a Psychotherapist/Counsellor?
We use the words Counsellor and Psychologist interchangeably. A Psychotherapist/Counsellor is a professional who has been trained to use therapeutic methods to help a client with their particular area of concern. All of our panel members are qualified to degree level and beyond.
A Psychologist is has similar training to the Psychotherapist but they also have additional academic expertise. This gives them the knowledge to recognise and flag possible neurological, learning, emotional or developmental issues which may need further exploration through a psychological assessment.
A Psychiatrist is a fully trained, medical Doctor whose specialist area of practice is mental health. They concentrate on the biological and chemical side of a mental health concern and usually work in tandem with the client’s GP. The psychiatrist may prescribe medication if necessary, they may also call upon the expertise of a Psychotherapist or a psychologist if counselling is needed.
Do you offer Medic-Legal Report writing?
Yes. Our Clinical Psychiatrist Dr. Brid Corkery complies Medico-Legal Reports. A referral from a Solicitor is essential. Once we receive a referral, the clinic will contact you to set up an initial consultation. Please note that more that one appointment may be required to compile a report. This depends on the complexity of the case. Please refer to our rates page for a breakdown of costs
What is a Psychological Assessment?
A psychological assessment is a process which usually requires three sessions that involve in-depth psychological testing. The psychological assessment is usually conducted with a view to issuing a report. If required, the psychologist will then provide follow-up treatment and therapy.
Can a Clinical Psychologist provide and Educational Report?
Yes. Clinical Psychologists who are registered with NEPS (National Educational Psychological Service) are qualified to conduct an Educational Psychology assessment and their report will be accepted by the Department of Education.
I am unable to attend my appointment, can I avail of a telephone/Skype session instead?
In short yes. We do try to be as flexible as possible to ensure you can avail of your session. If you need to change your session to a telephone or Skype call at any point we can usually facilitate this for you. However, we do recommend to check if this is ok in advance so that the Therapist/Doctor can ensure they have the devices and internet connection they need available at the time of your appointment.
