B.A ( Hons) Counselling with Addiction
Dermot is a general therapist trained in the fields of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, grief & loss, etc. His main area of expertise is in the treatment of mainstream addictions such as alcohol, drugs & gambling. His approach is to aid in the resolution of unresolved traumas that, for the most part drive our unhealthy behaviors.
His primary modality of practice is person centered or Rogerian therapy; where the client travels a journey, at their own pace, with some gentle challenging from the therapist. He focuses on creating a safe space, in complete confidentiality for the client to explore their issues, where the development of a trusting relationship enhances the therapeutic process and allows the client to explore unresolved trauma in an environment where they feel safe.
He utilizes other modalities such as CBT & Reality therapy to encourage the client to a clearer picture of the actuality of their situation and as an aid to identifying maladaptive behaviors and what actions the client needs to undertake to alter these behaviors, thus identifying choices and solutions to the presenting issues.
He is accredited with The Irish Association of Counselors and Psychotherapists and also with Addiction Counselors of Ireland. He practices to the most stringent ethical guidelines as laid down by both of these organizations.
